LOVE and SERVICE

Adapted from Dr Bob’s Farewell talk at Cleveland Convention 30 July 1950

A.A. membership was approaching a hundred thousand and there were thirty-five hundred groups worldwide at the time of the first AA World Convention in Cleveland 28-30 July 1950. The decision to hold this first international convention was a fine example of how Bill Wilson was always able to stay on top of trends that threatened to divide A.A. His enormous personal popularity was the cement that bound A.A. Dr Bob gave his farewell talk on 30 July 1950 at the event. Listen here

Three thousand people attended the first international convention in Cleveland at the end of July 1950. This was the only international Convention attended by Dr. Bob. His wife, Anne, had died the year before, and Bob was very ill with cancer.

Bill chose Cleveland for several reasons:
1 — It would be possible for Dr. Bob to attend, since it was not far from Akron.
2 — It had one of the largest and earliest concentrations of sober alcoholics.
3 — It was the home turf of Clarence Snyder (the “Home Brewmeister) who had begun claiming that he was the founder of AA. He based this claim on the fact that when the Cleveland members broke away from the Akron group because priests were refusing to allow Catholics to attend Oxford Group meetings, the Cleveland group was the first group that used the name Alcoholics Anonymous.
4 — Convention planning required a lot of cooperation between Cleveland, Akron, and New York, which would help to ameliorate friction between the three groups.

Dr. Bob, whose cancer was painfully advanced, spoke only briefly. The experience exhausted him. He left the convention early and was driven home to Akron. He died within six months, on November 16, 1950.

Dr Bob famously said “Our Twelve Steps, when immersed down to the last, resolve themselves into the words ‘love’ and ‘service.’” More information available here

Dr. Bob said in his farewell talk ‘my good friends in AA and of AA. I feel I would be very remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to welcome you not only to this meeting but those that have already transpired. I hope very much that the presence of so many people and the words that you hear will prove an inspiration to you. In other words, we hope that your visit here will be both enjoyable and profitable’.

I get a big thrill out of feeling that possibly some small thing that I did a number of years ago, played an infinitely small part in making this meeting possible. I also get quite a thrill when I think that we all had the same problem. We all did the same things. We all get the same results in proportion to our zeal and enthusiasm and stick-to-itiveness. If you will pardon the injection of a personal note at this time, let me say that I have been in bed five of the last seven months and my strength hasn’t returned as I would like, so my remarks of necessity will be very brief.

There are two or three things that flashed into my mind on which it would be fitting to lay a little emphasis; one is the simplicity of our Program. Let’s not louse it all up with Freudian complexes and things that are interesting to the scientific mind, but have very little to do with our actual AA work. Our 12 Steps, when simmered down to the last, resolve themselves into the words love and service. We understand what love is and we understand what service is. So let’s bear those two things in mind.

Let us also remember to guard that erring member – the tongue, and if we must use it, let’s use it with kindness and consideration and tolerance.

And one more thing; none of us would be here today if somebody hadn’t taken time to explain things to us, to give us a little pat on the back, to take us to a meeting or two, to have done numerous little kind and thoughtful acts in our behalf. So let us never get the degree of smug complacency so that we’re not willing to extend or attempt to, that help which has been so beneficial to us, to our less fortunate brothers.

Out Of The Fog!: A Story of Survival, Faith and Courage (English Edition) par [Sandra CH Smith]

Out Of The Fog!” is for those seeking a happy and joyous life, free from addiction. This is the inspiring story of a 35-year-old woman who had everything—until Demon Rum crept in to steal it all away. The author shares how she learned to shove fear aside and step into a rewarding adventurous life. At 8 years sober, Smith buys a sailboat, teaches herself to sail, and embarks, mostly alone, sometimes with her rebellious teenage daughter, on a 7-year spiritual odyssey in the Pacific. She follows the constellations (until a fellow boater points out that they move!) from San Francisco to the Polynesian Triangle somewhere off Easter Island. “Out of the Fog!” provides painful but compelling insights into overcoming addiction as well as solving mother-daughter issues. Illustrating the power of hope, faith and courage in facing the challenges of recovery and in healing fragile relationships.

Waking Up is for those who follow no religion but suspect that important truths can be found in the experiences of such figures as Jesus, the Buddha, Lao Tzu, Rumi, and others. Throughout Harris argues that there is more to understanding reality than science and secular culture generally allow, and that how we pay attention to the present moment largely determines the quality of our lives.

Scientific Prayer enables you, sooner or later, to get yourself, or anyone else, out of any difficulty on the face of the earth. It is the Golden Key to harmony and happiness. To those who have no acquaintance with the mightiest power in existence, this may appear a rash claim, but it needs only a fair trial to prove that, without a shadow of doubt, it is a just one. You need to take no one’s word for it, and you should not. Simply try it for yourself, and see.

Value €10.00

Distilled from years of study and lecture, affirmed by nearly a million listeners over the last 50 years, Emmet Fox’s answer in The Sermon on the Mount is simple. The Bible is a “textbook of metaphysics” and the teachings of Jesus express – without dogma – a practical approach for the development of the soul and for the shaping of our lives into what we really wish them to be. For Fox, Jesus was “no sentimental dreamer, no mere dealer in empty platitudes, but the unflinching realist only a great mystic can be”.

Value €7.50

Stools and Bottles: 2010 Reprint of 1955 edition. Some years ago the author of The Little Red Book worked out a novel presentation of the first four steps of the A.A. program. Visual aids, consisting of a three-legged stool and eight empty whiskey bottles, were used to portray the intangible factors of these fundamental steps. The book provides thirty-one daily reminders. They deal with A.A. problems commonly encountered by alcoholics who try to make A.A. their way of life.

Value €10.00

Alcohol Explained is the definitive, ground-breaking guide to alcohol and alcoholism. It explains how alcohol affects human beings on a chemical, physiological and psychological level, from those first drinks right up to chronic alcoholism. Alcoholism and problem drinking seems illogical to those on the outside, indeed it is equally perplexing for the alcoholic or problem drinker.

Value €13.00

The Sober Survival Guide is a unique quit alcohol book and is split into two parts. The first part is designed to set you up for success and put you in a place where you can find freedom from alcohol. The second part serves as a handbook as you move forward into an alcohol-free life and is where this book comes into its own. I used to believe that I couldn’t live without alcohol. Alcohol addiction is never a person’s fault

Value €10.00

Becoming Supernatural: The author of the New York Times bestseller You Are the Placebo, as well as Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself and Evolve Your Brain, draws on research conducted at his advanced workshops since 2012 to explore how common people are doing the uncommon to transform themselves and their lives. Becoming Supernatural marries some of the most profound scientific information with ancient wisdom to show how people like you and me can experience a more mystical life.

Value €20.00

Language Of The Heart: In 1935, two drunks met and talked in the library of a home in Akron, Ohio, and from that single event was to grow a program of recovery for more than a million once-hopeless alcoholics. How did the seed that became Alcoholics Anonymous take root and develop? The articles in this book tell much of that story. In the Grapevine, AA’s international journal, co-founder Bill W. recorded–and reflected on–AA’s history as it happened. A prolific writer, Bill authored more than 150 Grapevine articles, from 1944 to the late 1960’s and virtually all of them appear here, published for the first time in one volume. A man of extraordinary energy and action, Bill committed his thoughts to paper with great facility.

Cebra lies buried in the village of Urrugne 22 Kms from Biarritz.

Biarritz site of the 2019 G7 summit meeting is known for its famous beaches, therapeutic water and thriving surf scene, Biarritz once a small fishing village, was made fashionable after 1854 by Napoleon III and his Spanish empress, Eugénie. The British are largely responsible for its growth as a winter residence. Visited by Queen Victoria, Edward VII, and Alfonso XIII of Spain, Biarritz began to call itself “the queen of resorts and the resort of kings.” In the late six hundreds, Biarritz was the fishing port that developed commercial whaling as the world came to know it. Biarritz conducts a surfing festival and hosts the European longboard championships. Biarritz is ideal for pilgrims, being close to Lourdes, (world’s leading pilgrimage site), Loyola, (birth place of St Ignatius, founder of the Jesuit Order) and St Paul de Dax, (home of St Vincent de Paul), St Jean Pied de Port nearby, is a French gateway to El Camino and Santiago de Compostela. – Description | Hotel | Tour-guides | Transport | Costs –

Lourdes is a global centre of Marian pilgrimage, receiving millions of visitors each year.
Many Catholics believe the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, appeared 18 times at the Grotto to a young girl, Saint Bernadette Soubirous.
Lourdes has grown into the largest Marian pilgrimage centre in the world.
Due to the small area of the town, most destinations can be reached on foot
The Lourdes Sanctuary Complex is open from 5AM to midnight daily.
Many of the activities in the city are only available from April to October
Don’t miss the nightly candlelight procession
Extend your visit: – Day-Trip, One, Two, or more days to Lourdes

Lourdes located only 90 kilometers east of Biarritz, has been a pilgrimage site since 1858, the year of the first apparition in a cave – the Grotte de Massabielle – when the Virgin Mary appeared several times to local girl, Bernadette Soubirous.

From this beginning a substantial pilgrimage destination has arisen, a substantial industry has flourished based on these pilgrims, Lourdes is one of France’s leading tourist resorts, with over 220 hotels it boasts the largest number of hotels of any town in France outside of Paris, occupied by 6 million visitors each year.

The sanctuary and Grotte area of Lourdes is a calm, restful environment where the faithful gather, while the town outside the sanctuary is crowded with gift shops and restaurants. If you can enjoy one and ignore the other a visit can be very pleasant!

The Sanctuary impresses one and all with the dimensions of the esplanade of the Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire Basilica which can accommodate nearly 40,000 faithful. Watching over the sacred place on each side of the esplanade, are the statues of Therese of the Child Jesus and Bernadette.

At the heart of the site is the famous Grotte (cave) of Massabielle, as well as the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Discover the Cave of Apparitions and the miraculous water source discovered by Bernadette, the Sainte-Bernadette church, and the impressive basilica Saint-Pie X, built underground, which encourages reflection and spreads a sense of serenity.

Enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Lourdes, Tarbes, Pau, the Argelès Gazost valley and the Pyrenean summits, by taking the century-old funicular that brings you to the summit of the Pic du Jer in a few minutes. where you can enjoy a 360 ° panoramic view.

TOUR-GUIDES

Pyrenean Cultural Guides have been exploring and explaining the history of the region’s emblematic monuments and secret places for over 30 years. They also enjoy informing you about lesser-known but equally fascinating tales and legends.

Visit the main landmark of Lourdes and the goal of thousands of travellers, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes. It was built on the very spot where the Virgin Mary first appeared to St. Bernadette. The so-called “Domain” includes two basilicas. The Rosary Basilica (Basilique Rosaire) is built in neo-Byzantine style, and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception (Basilique Supérieure) is a true Neo-Gothic monument.

In the immediate vicinity is the Massabielle Grotto (Grotte Miraculeuse) where more than one and a half centuries ago the first healing source was discovered. At present, separate baptismal fonts for men and women are organized here. Bathing remains one of the kindest and most symbolic traditions for travellers.

At the heart of the site is the famous cave of Massabielle, a place full of stories, as well as the basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Discover the Cave of Apparitions and the miraculous water source discovered by Bernadette, the Sainte-Bernadette church, or the impressive basilica Saint-Pie X, built underground, which encourages reflection and spreads a sense of serenity.

Discover the most breath-taking landscapes in the region with the impressive Cirque of Gavarnie, the Peak of Midi or Gaube Lake! Tours are offered in other areas all over the South-West of France. They offer many ideas for potential excursions so don’t think twice discover the hidden mysteries of the Pyrenees!

As one guide put it; after trekking in the Alps and Himalayas, I finally found my base camp in the Pyrenees, in the land of 2000 lakes. I continue to explore these wonderful mountains as a qualified guide. I was very interested in the rich Pyrenean heritage, as I opened the doors of many churches, and was stunned when I found golden baroque altarpieces and many other fascinating artefacts.

It was then that I decided to share my passion for the stories and the history of this land to visitors.

After you have experienced the magnificent Pyrenees, you will understand why I never want to change my job! 🙂

Your guides can host groups of up to 50 persons per guide, though 30 or less is the preferred group size. The ideal tour is a 2 ½ hours walking tour of Lourdes, the sanctuary, and Basilicas. A second day’s tour may include visiting the 1000 year-old Le Chateau fort de Lourdes, Bernadette’s home, other pilgrim attractions and a ride up the funicular railway to the Pic De Jer

Le Pic du Jer has a large cross and can be accessed by the 100 year-old funicular railway reaching the summit in minutes. The ascent is stunning, taking you through the pine trees and offering magnificent views over Lourdes, Pau, and Tarbes and of course… the Pyrenees. It’s well worth a trip.

Château fort de Lourdes

The chateau of Lourdes and the Pyrenean museum
This great structure doesn’t go unnoticed: discover this historical monument that traces more than 1000 years of history, with preserved defensive architecture. And to finish the visit, there is nothing better than a walk in the botanical garden!

General information
For visitors looking for a spiritual experience masses are offered in over 22 languages, at all times of the day and night: the tourist office in Lourdes will give you all the information you need. For the curious or those seeking a cure it is a good idea to get the program of masses. With countless churches burning over 750 tonnes of candles each year, nine museums and far too many souvenir shops, Lourdes tries to combine an important historical value with a great deal of plastic tat.

A handy way to get around Lourdes is by using the tourist train. This covers 7.5 kilometers and the trip lasts about 45 minutes: it offers you the chance to see the Cité Mariale, the old quarters, the upper town and its historic buildings. You can hop on and off the train at various intervals throughout the journey, but if driving through by car, beware, the driver gets irate if you get in his way.

A visit to Le Petit Lourdes provides a journey to Lourdes of the past. Le Petit Lourdes, with its houses and rivers, is a quaint setting with the flowers and trees surrounding the old part of Lourdes.

PRE-EVENT TOURISM ACTIVITY (WEDNESDAY)

The idea of a Pre-Convention Tourism/AA lunch activity for Wednesday 7 October 2020 has developed and may be interesting to you, if you are in Biarritz early for the convention

The idea is to travel to St Jean Pied de Port (mile 0 from SW France on the El Camino and only 50 minutes by road from Biarritz} by car and have an inexpensive lunch at the Central Hotel

St Jean Pied de Port is a beautiful town and is located in a very picturesque region.

It is a 50 minute drive through the pastoral, picturesque, mountainous Basque Country/Pays Basque and is an opportunity to view some of this magnificent countryside.

The idea is to travel by car from Biarritz – local AAs can offer only 3 seats in a small European car, other visiting AAs with a rental car could offer additional seats/transport.

If there is sufficient interest a coach/bus could be chartered at additional cost. Such a charter would be subject to booking availability and can be difficult to find/book in early October

The plan is to leave Biarritz (venue hotel) at 11h00 sharp, eat lunch at 12h30, visit St Jean Pied de Port until about 16h00, and return to Biarritz in time for a swim in the ocean or pool and dinner

Hotel Central is located in the center of the town right on the river and offers excellent food, great value, and superb service – the restaurant transports one time-wise back to the 1800s/early 1900s

The day’s activity  should not cost more than 25.00 euro (excluding personal purchases and any contributions to car-fuel)

Please email babanglophonegroup@gmail.com if you are interested in participating and if you will have a rental car available. When we know how many there will be, we will book/reserve at table in the restaurant and explore charter bus possibilities

OTHER UPDATES

For those of you registered to go to Lourdes; it is too early to justify chartering a bus/coach.  Alternative transport to Lourdes would be by regular scheduled train service on Monday 12 October 2020. The Lourdes Guide/s would meet you at Lourdes train station

Full details will be provided to the relevant parties/persons by separate email

REMINDERS:

1: For those of you not already pre-registered to the convention, it is worth noting capacity is limited to registered attendees
2 Accommodation: allocated venue hotel rooms are in short supply
3 : Participation in the banquet/dinner on the Saturday needs to be booked with the hotel before 30 September 2020
